How it Works

Remote heart monitoring with instant feedback is easy. The AfibAlert® allows users to monitor their atrial fibrillation (AF or Afib) anytime, anywhere. Only contact a healthcare provider if a red-light illuminates on the Afib monitor, or a patient is experiencing serious symptoms.

Taking a Reading

Patients can take a reading by placing their thumbs on the raised metal tabs called “electrodes,” which allows the Afib monitor to detect an arrhythmia. For patients who have physical limitations, wristband or sticky electrodes can be used with an included electrode cable.

Getting Instant Feedback

Lohman Technologies’ patented algorithm analyzes the patient’s heartbeat and the appropriate icon illuminates to show what action is needed. AfibAlert’s® algorithm was validated against 51,000+ ECG strips from the MIT-BIH Atrial Fibrillation Database with known diagnosis. The Afib monitor’s results were excellent, with 94.6% accuracy in detecting the presence of arrhythmias. This Afib monitor will provide an immediate alert (red light) for Atrial Fibrillation (AF) only. However, it will record all ECG data for future upload and review, but will not detect other potentially life threatening arrhythmias.  The AfibAlert® only determines if Afib is present during the 45-second testing period. The AfibAlert® does not continuously monitor your heart and cannot alert you if an arrhythmia happens any other time. If symptoms are present, data should be transmitted even if there is no outward sign of Atrial Fibrillation. If you feel you are in immediate danger, call 911.

Understanding Your Afib Monitor 

The AfibAlert’s® patented algorithm analyzes your ECG data and emits a red or green light, signifying the probability of Afib. The AfibAlert® should be used for guidance only. Only an experienced healthcare professional can make a conclusive diagnosis of atrial fibrillation. It is advisable that your physician or healthcare professional view your recorded data to verify the presence or absence of atrial fibrillation.

Red Light: High probability of AF. Act as specified by your physician. Upload the data to the AfibAlert™ website and inform your physician or call your trans-telephonic service provider as specified by your physician.

Green Light: Low probability of AF. Data has been successfully stored for later upload or transmission. However, if symptoms are present, take appropriate action.

Blue Light: Indicates that the recorder is acquiring and analyzing the data. Also, indicates when data is being uploaded or transmitted to a service center.

Yellow Light: Unable to obtain a reading. May indicate poor electrode contact. Test should be repeated.

Uploading ECG Recordings

Recordings can be uploaded directly to the AfibAlert® website. Either connect the Afib monitor to a Windows PC with a USB cable, or transmit your recording to a service provider through your telephone. Data is ready to be viewed or printed immediately after upload, and can be saved as a PDF file. Patient’s must notify their physician if data has been uploaded for review, as Lohman Technologies does not actively monitor the site. Only authorized personnel have access to your ECG data.

Accessing Stored Data

As an AfibAlert® user or prescriber, you can access your own or your patients’ electrocardiograph (ECG) recordings day or night on the AfibAlert® website. With the purchase of an Afib monitor an account name and password are automatically provided to both the patient and prescribing physician. Use this information to log-on to the AfibAlert® website for viewing data. A patient will use their same account to both upload and view their ECG recordings. Stored ECG recordings are time stamped and colored coded based on what the algorithm detected during the test. You can access data on the AfibAlert® Windows app that available for installation on a PC (Windows XP, 7 , 8 and 10 compatible). An app is also available for mobile devices.
