Screening for Atrial Fbrillation (AF) in the Elderly Population Reduces Risk of Stroke and Death
The AF-SCREEN International Collaboration comprising over 130 internationally recognized cardiologists, neurologists, GPs, health economists, nurses, pharmacists, and patient support organizations from 33 countries released a whitepaper recommending that screening for atrial fibrillation (AF) in the elderly population be increased to reduce their risk of stroke and death. Ad hoc screening can catch one to three percent of undiagnosed AF in the population between the ages of 65 and 75 which leads to a sizeable number of individuals being identified to be proactively treated before an adverse outcome occurs. Part of this recommendation was made due to the ease, accuracy and low cost at which screening can be done now with the advent of handheld ECG devices that detect AF. The AfibAlert® is one of those devices. Combining the AfibAlert® with the its Clinical Manager Application provides healthcare providers the means to quickly, accurately and cost effectively screen this large, at risk population.
